Ah the memories of a vacation long past. I am now two weekends from QuakeCon 2010. Now to recap the event!
Monday
The trip started out with me working a half day tying up loose ends before my trek away from the data center for a week. Projects were not left undone and questions were answered. Around noon, I departed work and headed my way toward Gwinnett.
After spending a little time with Michelle, I trekked to sp00nz’s house. We cleaned his car in preparation of the trip.
[insert the rest of the day here] Not really much to talk about there…
Later that night we decided to drive around to see how the equipment and the packed car would handle with the equipment loaded how it was. On the way back, a deer ran across the road almost causing a big accident. Thankfully, the QuakeCon gods wouldn’t allow our demise so soon. We headed home (carefully) and caught some shut-eye before our long drive the next day.
Tuesday
Nothing to really speak of the drive.
[insert 13.5 hours of sitting]
When we arrived, we were pretty beat and decided to get some sleep before our big day of standing in line….and my big day of installing and troubleshooting.
Wednesday
We woke up at a reasonable time excited to jump in the line for QuakeCon 2010. Arriving to the hotel, we decided to go check out how bad it was….

When we made our appearance the excitement truly set in when we saw the huge “Welcome to QuakeCon 2010″ sign hanging up showing us the way. It was good to be finally where we belong! “Whats this!?” I thought to myself. The line had only 40 people in it! Quickly, we grabbed all of our computer equipment and settled in our place in line. This was the best spot in the QuakeCon line we have ever had.
[insert waiting in line here]
As the hours rolled by of good times playing portable video games and chatting with other gamers about QuakeCon, I get a text message from my new NOC friends. Kuffs, Ash, and maber wanted to meet me and proclaim I was being “bumped up”. Excited, I jumped the line and was able to register as a volunteer. Unfortunately, I had to leave my posse behind and venture forth to the world of QuakeCon volunteer staff!
“Here is my time to shine” I thought to myself nervously as I shifted through my equipment readying the equipment to install the Team Fortress 2 and Counter-Strike: Source servers.
And so, the install process began! As I found a suitable table for the guys for the weekend I was hollered at by Ash to come up to the NOC. An overwhelming feeling of joy rushed over me while I quickly obliged and rose up to the occasion. ”Wow! I am actually standing on the NOC platform of the biggest LAN party in the US!” Thoughts started racing and the nervousness started gushing. Sitting typing frantically at their workstations sat Kuffs, Xipher, Ash, and maber. I have been talking with these guys for weeks before the event in IRC. They were cool then, and they were even cooler in person. Couldn’t have asked for better superiors to look up to while getting my feet wet. After real life introductions were passed around, I proceeded back to my laptop nearby.
I got my equipment ready to rock and started to power up my equipment. ”Um, you are supposed to drop off and leave” I heard looking up to a kind fellow. I was a little puzzled when I heard this and stammered out a response, “Well, uh… I uhm am helping out Xipher, Kuffs, Ash, and maber with uh setting up gameservers.” He looked a little puzzled as well at this point. I decided that it would be better if I asked the NOC staff what to do. They explained they weren’t ready at the moment for me. I agreed. It wasn’t that great of a time to set up stuff, as the line started moving and people were starting to bring equipment in anyway.
We met up with the guys and headed to the room.
Hours later, Xipher let me know the gameserver space was ready. Without going into too much boring detail about my monotonous methods of thinking while I set up computer systems. Trust me, even I bore myself with the complex thought processes that….I’m doing it now. I will spare you the details.
[meanwhile...5AM... I went to bed]
Thursday
Gameservers ready to go, computers all fired up, the expo a boomin’, QuakeCon was in full swing. Unfortunately, we were still asleep. Alarms finally started going off around noon to get up and go seize the day.
Commence gaming, commence watching, commence BYOC!
